also known as BWAD! The celebration of every one's favorite packaging helper! Some partake in the celebration of this day by creating bubble wrap animals and dresses. Or just grab a sheet and pop all the bubbles.
It is also inspire your heart with art day, so maybe I will create some bubble wrap themed art!

Inane Answering Machine Message Day

I am sure I'm not the only one who has started talking after someone says "hey" only to find that they have set up their answering machine like that in order to deceive me!

You can check out a list of them here, but here is one as a little teaser:

Hi, this is John's answering machine again. He's gone and left me for a sleazy microwave he met at Krazy Eddy's. Life sucks.

You know you want to click.

Curmudgeons Day

An annual celebration of the crusty, yet insightful, wags who consistently apply the needle of truth to the balloons of hypocrisy and social norms. Always celebrated on Jan 29, the birthday of W.C. Fields, one of America’s most beloved curmudgeons.
Hurray for a day when I have an excuse to act like a crusty, cranky man!

Thank a PLugin Developer Day!

When I first read this I thought it was talking about like plugins as in electrical sockets, but technology fail for me because today is the day we celebrate the developers of computer plugins.

Just in case you are still confused a plugin is defined by wiki as:a set of software components that adds specific capabilities to a larger software application. If supported, plug-ins enable customizing the functionality of an application. For example, plug-ins are commonly used in web browsers to play video, scan for viruses, and display new file types. Well-known plug-ins examples include Adobe Flash Player and QuickTime.

I have been known to enjoy my Quicktime, so thank you developer of Quicktime

Thomas Crapper Day

Today is the anniversary of the passing of Thomas Crapper, the man, the myth, the maverick.
Tom was born in England in the 1830s, where he grew up and became apprenticed to a plumber who went on to invent the "crapper" which became out modern day toilet. You can read more about Tom here. I thank you Tom, along with all my fecal matter.

Change your life, change the world slogan. You don't have to go run a marathon to make Nike proud!! Just do something you've been putting off- laundry, cleaning, getting work done. And it doesn't have to be boring stuff, either! There are tons of things you're probably dying to do and you needed Just Do It Day to get you to do it. Snow Plow Mailbox Hockey Day

It's wintertime, and time for Snow Plow Drivers everywhere to see how many rural mailboxes they can knock over. Twenty extra points for boosting one into the next township!
Unfortunately, it is not very likely that there will be any snow or snowplows out here tomorrow, anyone else in a snowy city and willing to play?

POLKA DOTS!

Happy National Polka Dot Day!

The pattern polka dot was named for the dance polka even though there is zero connection between the two. Wikipedia seems to think that polka dots are reserved for children's clothing and the outfits of dancers and performers. I am here to tell you NO! Polka dots can be classy and professional! If done tastefully, you can wear polka dots from 1 to 99.

Do you need anymore evidence? I don't think so. Happy Polka Dot Day- wear what you want!

International Fetish Day

Technically, according to the wiki article, today specifically celebrates sexual fetishes and is supposed to serve as a way to celebrate sexual freedom. This is a fairly new holiday that was started in the U.K. in 2008. One of the main events of this holiday is "perverts wear purple" where members of the fetish community are encouraged to wear purple today to show that any one can enjoy fetishism. Today I will share just one type of fetish with you that I have recently discovered: puffer coat fetishism. You can read this article about it from Vice, but be warned that the video is probably NSFW

Take A Walk Outdoors Day!

Today is a day to take a walk outdoors!!! Let's admit it. Whether you live someplace gorgeous or someplace ugly, you could probably use the exercise reminder. If you live someplace nice, then you can learn to appreciate all that is around you because you always forget. And if you live someplace ugly, then you can go on a journey to find something pretty where you live. Today is your day to find that. Whether it's a park or a creative mailbox, it's there! You have to find it! You have to take that walk outdoors! And you have to enjoy it for the sake of celebrating!

Whoever decided this must've had a good laugh out of making this day in January.

Tin Can Day!

It celebrates the birth of the tin can!
Wikipedia encyclopedia tells us that "The tin can was patented in 1810 by the English inventor Peter Durand." "He did not produce any food cans himself, but sold his patent to two other Englishmen, Bryan Donkin and John Hall, who set up a commercial canning factory, and by 1813 were producing their first canned goods for the British Army." "Nowadays cans are usually recycled."

Did you know that the first can opener was made, 50 years after the first tin can?

Double your celebration, double you fun

You probably already know that today is Martin Luther King day, since you probably have the whole day off to celebrate. But did you know that there is a famous birthday we celebrate today as well? Two great men. Bifocals, and civil rights. Today is indeed a day for celebration.

Miss America Pageant!

Today is the day of the Miss America Pageant. Ironically as I researched information about the pageant, it still calls itself "a scholarship program". But they do prefer to avoid the term "beauty pageant" since the swimsuit and evening wear portions only make up 35% of the total score.
(oh Mario!)
So go get dressed up, or sit in your sweats and watch the results tonight (or at least watch Miss Congeniality)!

Pets!

Happy National Dress Up Your Pet Day!

Eesh. We've all seen the cutesy costumes at Target or pet stores. For some reason, people like dressing up their pets. Today is a celebration of that. Not just the people that go to Target and buy reindeer ears, but the people that make their own outfits for their pets. Sewing machine and everything. What more could you want than your pet dressed up in a ridiculous costume against his own will? It's worth all the effort and energy getting the thing to stay on when you see how cute your pet looks. Apparently. The rest of us get to bum off the amusement without all the effort via these pictures.

Bath Safety

The only possible way to follow-up the last post is to discuss one the holidays we get to celebrate ALL month long: bath safety month!
For your reading pleasure, here are 10 tips you can try this month {via associated content}

Bathroom safety tip # 1

Electrical items in the bathroom are sometimes necessary, but they can lead to deadly accidents or injury. NEVER plug in an electrical appliance near an area where water is present. This includes the bathtub, toilet, and even sink. One false move could plunge a plugged-in electrical item into water, causing electrocution.

Bathroom safety tip # 2

Use slip resistant mats or materials in and around wet areas. Purchase mats with a non-slip backing, or gritty surface, to help in preventing bathroom slips and falls.

Bathroom safety tip # 3

Mop up any accumulated water from the floor. If children are in the home, always inspect the floor surface after bath time, hand washing, or teeth brushing. This will ensure there aren't any water puddles on the floor. Not only can this water cause slips and falls, but it also goes back to bathroom safety tip # 1; electrocution.

Bathroom safety tip # 4

Protect electrical outlets with a ground-fault circuit interrupter. An electrician can install this for you, and it will protect you from being shocked, in the event that water and electricity come together.

Bathroom safety tip # 5

Install grab bars in or around the bathtub and shower area, and also by the toilet. When installed properly, grab bars make it easier to get out of the bath, and are good to have in case you loose your footing in the tub or shower. Senior citizens, in particular, can benefit from having grab bars installed in the home. NEVER use a soap dish or towel rack as a grab bar.

Bathroom safety tip # 6

To prevent burns, set hot water heaters at, or below, a temperature of 120 degrees Fahrenheit. Also, select anti-scald faucets. It's also a safe idea to keep a bathroom window ajar to prevent overheating. If there is no bathroom window, an exhaust fan can be helpful in keeping air circulated.

Bathroom safety tip # 7
If there are small children in the home, a lock should be installed outside the bathroom door. This lock should be installed high on the door, out of reach of children, and should remain locked at all times. Small children have drown in toilets, or even as little as an inch of water. There are too many dangers in the bathroom to take chances.

Happy Bathing!
take a hot, soothing bath. Just don't forget to take your best friend of today a long with you:
Happy Rubber duck day!

I really wanted to figure out the origin of rubber duckies for you today, but all wiki could tell me was that they were popularized in the Muppet song "Rubber Ducky". I was expecting some long and exciting history here! Oh, well, it is a day for celebrating a useless bath toy never-the-less.

Pills pills all types of pills!

HAPPY NATIONAL PHARMACIST DAY!!!

What a good looking group of professionals!!!! We love them because at some point in each of our lives, we're going to fall apart. And at this point, we will need drugs. And pharmacists are the ones who give them to us. Thank you pharmacists for monitoring our drugs so that we feel better without dying!

Happy Peculiar People Day!

My, my, my. Today is Peculiar People Day! If I had known this, I would've planned for months, deciding on the perfect people to include in this post.

There are two kinds of peculiar people. There are the ones that you run into that may confuse you at first because you're caught off-guard. Here's what I've learned about these people: they are EVERYWHERE. Starbucks, libraries, Target, hanging out on street corners. And they don't try to blend in. You run into one a day practically. And then there are the ones you work with or see on a regular basis. Those are the ones that you learn a bit too much about, but you always get a good chuckle from it at the end of the day.
Then there are the peculiar people that are famous. These are the people that we can all gather together to discuss. They're probably on magazine covers, jumping on couches on tv (cheap shot), or doing weird things in hotels and the police come and someone overdoses. We just don't get these people. At all.
After writing all this I feel bad about being mean, so luckily today we're celebrating these people! Celebrating their differences and the entertainment they bring to us all. So Happy Peculiar People Day!

STATIC ELECTRICITY

Today is National Static Electricity Day!!!! Who doesn't love static electricity? No one I know of. They made science museums exciting all across the country! The everyday way to have fun is by rubbing a balloon against your head to make it stick to the wall. Think of it as modern art. Something about electric charge and atoms and you have a day of educational fun! Happy National Static Electricity Day! Go celebrate by rubbing your feet on the carpet and then touching doorknobs or rubbing balloons against your head.

HAPPY NATIONAL SHOW AND TELL DAY AT WORK!

Yes! Days like this are the reason this blog exists! Happy National Show and Tell Day at Work! The irony of course being that today is Saturday, so I'm guessing most people didn't go to work. Who says all the fun had to end after elementary school!!! Show and Tell Day at Work is much more complex, though. Let me tell you the secrets. Now that we're older, showing up with a cat like Scotty here just won't cut it. You need something witty, something that will make people more interested in you. Maybe something that will make you seem more mysterious and make people stop and say "Hey, wait... do I really know so-and-so as well as I think I do?" I'd recommend using google to enhance your creativity.  Don't stress too much though because making up secret spy gadgets is always a back-up plan. Whatever you do, stay far away from pets, things you found, things you can buy at Walmart, and unidentifiable objects. Your story full of exaggerated excitement will impress no one.
Really, they should just call it Make Yourself Seem Cooler Than Everyone Else at Work Day.

I'm Not Going to Take it Anymore!

I have been going to the gym a lot recently (Since it is lose weight feel great week btw), and I don't have my own locker so I usually put my things in a cubby in the weight room. Now I don't get dressed up for the gym by any means, but there is a mirror right by those cubbies that makes everyone look fat. So I show up to exercise feeling all good, and then as I put down my stuff I catch glimpse of myself, feel terrible, and skulk off to the elliptical with my head hung low.

And I'm not going to take it anymore! Especially since today is "I'm not going to take it anymore day".

From now on I am going to find somewhere else to put my things and avoiding that mirror altogether!

I'm just a bill...

YES! Today is the day we've all been waiting for.... today is the birthday of SCHOOLHOUSE ROCK!

I thought the image was appropriate given that it is Schoolhouse Rock. 38 years since Schoolhouse Rock started teaching kids about multiplication, grammar, and the government.
I don't know about you but January 6th has now become a very special day for me. I think I've seen all of them at some point or another thanks to elementary school. It was always very exciting to watch these videos that were both educational AND fun! The top three that stuck with me the most were Three is a Magic Number, Conjunction Junction (voted best song on the 30th anniversary edition!), and I'm Just a Bill (voted second best!).
In case you missed out, here's an example of what you could have been enjoying-

Well done, Schoolhouse Rock, well done.

Happy Bird-day!

In the spirit of yesterdays trivia day, here is some trivia about bird day:

This is one of the three holidays celebrating birds-the oldest is "Bird Day" which is in May, today is "National Bird Day", and then there is also a "Migratory bird day"

National Bird Day was established by bird activists. It calls upon people to recognize the plight of captive birds. It also draws attention to exploitation of birds in the U.S. pet industry. On this day, organizers suggest we reflect upon the conditions of birds held in captivity.

So if you see any poor birds in captivity you should at least think about freeing them:

But really I think we all know this little guy would die if you freed him.

Trivia trivia trivia

Happy Trivia Day!

I have this theory I made up this very second. Everyone has a secret thing for trivia. Why are they still making versions of Trivial Pursuit? Even if no one buys it, everyone pauses at it on the game aisle. Everyone wants to pursue that trivia. Really, you can fail every test you ever take and as long as you have some trivia memorized, no one will ever believe your IQ is less than 80. Trivia is the key to conversation starters, awkward moments, and getting more cool points than you deserve. So here, enjoy some trivia!!!

+The only part of the human body that has no blood supply is the cornea in the eye. It takes in oxygen directly from the air.

+There's only one city in the United States named merely "Beach." It is found in North Dakota, which is a land-locked state.

+Baskin Robbins once made ketchup ice cream. This was the only vegetable flavored ice cream produced. (vegetable? whatever...)

+In Erwin, Tennessee an elephant was once hanged for murder.

+About 100 people choke to death on ballpoint pens each year.

+In 1845, President Andrew Jackson's pet parrot was removed from his funeral for swearing.

+The sandwich is named for the Fourth Earl of Sandwich (1718-92), for whom sandwiches were made so that he could stay at the gambling table without interruptions for meals.

+Donald Duck's middle name is Fauntleroy.

+Time magazine's "Man of the Year" for 1938 was Adolf Hitler.

+Only two people signed the Declaration of Independence on July 4th, John Hancock and Charles Thomson. Most of the rest signed on August 2, but the last signature wasn't added until 5 years later.

+Certain frogs can be frozen solid then thawed and continue living.

Drinking Straws, Sunshine, and Death!

Today I am unable to pick just one thing to celebrate since there are so many great things today:
1. Drinking Straw Day

Grab your beverage of choice, and drop a straw in that sucka! Bonus points if it's a crazy straw. Slowly sip beverage and note how much more pleasurable it is with the straw.

2. The Earth is at Perihelion

That means today is the day when the earth is closest to the sun.

3. Momento Mori Day
Momento mori is a latin phrase that means, "Remember your mortality", meaning that today is a day to contemplate that you will eventually die.

At this very moment I am sitting on the porch with the suns rays trying to blind me, sipping the last of the egg nog through a monkey straw. Now I better go contemplate my eventual death.

Happy Kakizome Day!!!

Happy Kakizome Day! We may not be Japanese, but that doesn't mean we can't celebrate!!!

Kakizome Day has been celebrated for centuries and centuries! January 2nd is traditionally the day in Japan that they practice their calligraphy and do the first writing of the year. Originally they would use the first water drawn from the well on New Years and rub it together with ink to make put haikus or phrases on long strips of paper. It's all very symbolic... the first writing, the first water, the new year.
It's actually a lot more complicated than it sounds. Japanese has over 2,000 characters and 3 different writing systems blended together. Kakizome Day is a day to let them express themselves and their language as an art form. They then hang them up and party hearty to celebrate how pretty their art is, just to take it down and burn it on January 14th. We don't understand the Japanese sometimes but we sure love their food!!!!

So here's to all those Japanese people calligraphying it up today, so that we can later print it on our t-shirts and cheap gift shop items!

Happy Z-Day

Today is Z-day, which is something I had never heard of before, but here is is as defined by Urban Dictionary:

Noun (zee day): A term probably coined by Max Brooks which refers to the war between zombies and mankind. Derived from the word D-Day, which is a British term used to refer to a variable day on which a combat attack or operation is initiated. Z-Day is marked by a sudden attack on mankind by zombies, which will lead to a widespread zombie outbreak. There are a number of zombie survivalist groups worldwide (largely in the US, UK, and Canada), that are already planning what to do when this day comes.

But then I kept read and also found this definition:

any day that one takes to avoid daily responsibilities(usually a day of school)by faking some kind of illness.

I am thinking that today's celebration actually refers to the second definition because everyone is tired from New Years, but I celebrated both, just so I'm covering my bases.

So, today I slept in until almost noon, and also read this article about how to protect yourself from zombies (there is also an article on how to protect yourself from zombies stripper in case that is a concern for you). I feel pretty good about my zombies preparedness, since my food storage has me pretty much set. I will also include this article written by my sister about how zombies are misunderstood (although I'm not sure she knows what a zombie really is)

So I am sure you read books about vampires and werewolves but what about zombies. You probably have seen the Hollywood version, but we really aren’t that creepy. I mean, we are probably the most human like monster.

Anyway, zombies look ordinary, act ordinary, an nobody but other monsters can tell we are what we are. The only thing is we live or “eat” on human happiness.

Yeah, so I guess you could say we kill people by making them so depressed.

Happy New Years!
